Top 10 Health Benefits of Low-level Laser Therapy

The Mladenoff Clinic of Arizona Team • September 27, 2023

If you have been keeping up with the recent wellness trends, you may have come across low level laser treatments and be wondering about the health benefits of cold-laser technology.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser therapy or photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, is a non-invasive, low-intensity light therapy that has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to stimulate healing. In contrast to standard lasers often used in surgery to apply intense heat to make incisions, the light intensity in LLLT is too low to heat the body’s tissues.

Specifically, the application of red and near infra-red light over injuries or lesions may improve wound and soft tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve acute and chronic pain, especially musculoskeletal pain.

What’s cold laser therapy? Cold laser therapy is low-intensity laser therapy that stimulates healing while using low levels of light. The technique is called “cold” laser therapy because the low levels of light aren’t enough to heat your body’s tissue. The level of light is low when compared to other forms of laser therapy, such as those used to destroy tumors and coagulate tissue. Surgical and aesthetic lasers heat the tissue being treated. True to its name, cold laser therapy does not. Cold laser therapy is also known as:

  • low-level laser therapy (LLLT)
  • low-power laser therapy (LPLT)
  • soft laser biostimulation
  • photobiomodulation

Potential Benefits of Low-Level Laser Therapy

Clinical trials and studies of low-level laser therapy suggest many beneficial effects, including:

1. Alleviates pain (analgesic): Low-level laser therapy alleviates pain in the following ways:

  • Partially blocks pain signals from nerves to the brain
  • Decreases nerve sensitivity
  • Reduces inflammation ( see No. 3 below )
  • Stimulates the production of high levels of pain-killing chemicals including endorphins, enkephalins, and opioids in the brain and adrenal glands
  • Stimulates muscle trigger points and acupuncture points non-invasively to relax contracted muscle fibers
2. Supports detoxification and removes fat that may stimulate weight loss: Low-level laser therapy liquifies the fatty content contained in fat cells and disrupts the membranes of these cells, inducing the formation of transitory pores that enable the liquified fat to seep out of the cells into spaces where the lymphatic system can begin to flush it from the body.

3. Reduces inflammation: Low-level laser therapy dilates blood vessels and activates the lymphatic system to drain swollen areas that are the result of trauma or inflammation.

4. Accelerates cell growth and tissue repair: Low-intensity light penetrates deep into tissues to accelerate cell reproduction and growth and increase energy availability to cells. It enhances cell metabolism by increasing adenosine triphosphate (ADP) production, which improves cell nutrition and waste elimination, which is especially effective in repairing tendons, ligaments, and muscles. It also stimulates fibroblast development in damaged tissue ( fibroblasts are the building blocks of collage , the essential protein required to replace old tissue or repair tissue injuries), making LLLT especially helpful in treating burns and open wounds.

5. Enhances vascular activity: Low-level laser therapy speeds the healing process, closes wounds more quickly, and reduces scarring in two ways:

  • Significantly increases the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue
  • Dilates blood vessels (increases their diameter), thereby improving the flow of blood to damaged tissues

6. Increases metabolic activity: Low-level laser therapy stimulates higher outputs of specific pro-healing enzymes in blood cells, along with improved oxygen and nutrient delivery.

7. Reduces formation of scar tissue: Low-level laser therapy reduces the formation of fibrous (scar) tissue from cuts, scratches, burns, or surgery.

8. Enhances nerve regeneration and function: Low-level laser therapy speeds up the process of axonal regeneration and nerve cell reconnection.

9. Supports immune system function: Low-level laser therapy directly affects immune function by stimulating the production of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes and by improving the ease of penetration of white blood cells into damaged tissue.

10. Reduces reliance on medications: Low-level laser therapy is considered a safe, natural, and effective alternative therapy that may help reduce or eliminate the need for opioids and other analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and other medications that may have undesirable side effects.

Low Level Laser Therapy Uses

Low-level laser therapy has a wide range of applications, including the following:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries and pain: Sprains (muscles and ligaments), tendonitis, bursitis, tennis elbow, neck pain, lower back pain, knee pain, muscle spasms, joint swelling.

  • Inflammation: Inflamed gums, carpal tunnel syndrome, and inflammation caused by autoimmune conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia).

  • Wound healing: For wounds that resist treatment, such as those related to diabetes.

  • Detoxification, fat loss, and weight management: When used as a complimentary element of an integrative plan of care, low-level laser therapy — like the protocol now available with Dr. D — may aid the body in eliminating excess fat that could be contributing to dysfunction or chronic illness.

  • Acupuncture: For patients who are uncomfortable with needles.

  • Skin rejuvenation: Acne, psoriasis, burns, vitiligo, dermatitis, rashes, edema (swelling).

The Foundation: How Nutrition Shapes Your Health Every cell, organ, and system in your body depends on essential nutrients and minerals to function properly. When your nutrition is balanced, your body operates efficiently—repairing tissues, regulating hormones, supporting brain health, and fueling energy production. However, modern diets often lack the nutrients needed for optimal wellness. Processed foods, refined sugars, and chronic stress can deplete your body’s stores of vital vitamins and minerals. Over time, this can contribute to inflammation, fatigue, poor digestion, and even nerve dysfunction. Essential Nutrients for a Strong Nervous System The nervous system is your body’s communication network, connecting your brain to every organ and tissue. Certain nutrients play key roles in keeping it healthy: Magnesium – Calms nerve impulses and supports muscle relaxation. B Vitamins (B1, B6, B12) – Vital for nerve repair, energy metabolism, and cognitive clarity. Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Reduce inflammation and protect nerve cell membranes. Vitamin D – Supports neuromuscular function and immune balance. Calcium & Potassium – Crucial for proper nerve signaling and muscle contraction. When your diet supplies these essentials, your nervous system can communicate clearly and efficiently—helping your entire body function more harmoniously. The Chiropractic Connection: Aligning Structure with Function Your spine is more than just a support structure—it’s the protective pathway for your central nervous system. Misalignments (known as subluxations) can disrupt nerve communication between the brain and body, leading to discomfort, reduced mobility, and decreased organ function over time. Chiropractic care helps restore proper alignment and motion to the spine, reducing interference within the nervous system. When your spine is aligned, your body can better regulate its internal systems—improving digestion, circulation, immune response, and even mood. At Mladenoff Clinic of Arizona, our goal is to help patients achieve balance from within. Regular chiropractic adjustments, combined with proper nutrition, create the foundation for lasting health and vitality. Lifestyle Synergy: Simple Daily Habits for Lasting Wellness Wellness isn’t achieved overnight—it’s built through consistent, intentional habits that support your body’s natural healing ability. Here are a few daily practices we recommend: Start Your Day with Hydration: Water supports every metabolic process and helps flush toxins. Move Regularly: Gentle exercise, stretching, and posture awareness complement chiropractic care. Manage Stress: Breathing exercises, mindfulness, and adequate sleep keep your nervous system balanced. Why Gut Health Matters Your gut isn’t just about digestion — it’s home to trillions of microorganisms (your microbiome) that impact nearly every system in your body. A healthy gut supports: Stronger immunity : Over 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. Balanced mood and mental clarity : Gut bacteria influence neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Reduced inflammation : A healthy gut keeps chronic inflammation in check, lowering the risk of pain and disease. Better nutrient absorption : So your body can get the most from the food you eat. The Gut–Spine Connection Here’s where chiropractic care comes in. Your gut and your nervous system are constantly communicating through the gut-brain axis . If your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can trigger stress signals to the nervous system — leading to tension, discomfort, and even spinal misalignments. On the flip side, spinal misalignments can disrupt nerve flow to the digestive system, slowing down motility, altering enzyme production, and contributing to bloating or irregularity. It’s a two-way street. By restoring alignment through chiropractic care, we help your nervous system function at its best — which directly supports gut health. A Whole-Body Approach at Mladenoff Clinic At our clinic, we don’t just adjust your spine and send you on your way. We take a whole-person approach that includes: Chiropractic adjustments to optimize nerve flow. Nutritional guidance to fuel a healthy gut microbiome. Lifestyle recommendations for stress reduction, sleep, and movement — all of which impact gut and spinal health. When your gut and nervous system are in sync, you’ll feel the difference: more energy, better digestion, sharper focus, and fewer aches and pains. Take the Next Step Toward Total Wellness If you’ve been struggling with digestive issues, fatigue, or unexplained pain, your gut may be asking for help. Chiropractic care at Mladenoff Clinic of Arizona could be the missing link to restoring balance and reclaiming your health. πŸ“ Ready to experience the gut–spine connection?
